The “PICVS” or woodpecker was holy to Romans and Samnite; it was one of the two animals that natured the twins of Rome. The Samnites, descendants of the Sabellica lineage, owe their arrival in Sannio also to the god Picvs, who is tied to the Ver Sacrum legend. In ancient days, groups of young me, who were chosen at the holy spring, would leave in search of new lands to live and cultivate, following totem animals, like the woodpecker, holy to the God Mars, considered oracular by Sanntes, Piceni and Romans.
The Samnite scutum, originally rectangular, parried from the forehead to the knee and through two holes it was possible to scrutinize the enemy camp. This weapon, over time, underwent numerous changes in shape, materials and dimensions. Its latest version allowed, in fact, the "tortoise" defensive formation, giving versatility to the warrior who wore it and to the Red who welcomes our bottle. Eye to scrutinize, hand to advance, mouth to savor the victory!
In local legends, it was the fair’s wine, floral, rich in fruity scents like cherries and berries:
