The “PICVS” or woodpecker was holy to Romans and Samnite; it was one of the two animals that natured the twins of Rome. The Samnites, descendants of the Sabellica lineage, owe their arrival in Sannio also to the god Picvs, who is tied to the Ver Sacrum legend. In ancient days, groups of young me, who were chosen at the holy spring, would leave in search of new lands to live and cultivate, following totem animals, like the woodpecker, holy to the God Mars, considered oracular by Sanntes, Piceni and Romans.

The literal tradition indicates, as an objective of the first Ver Sacrum in Sannio, the Samnite city of Bovianum (Boiano), the center of the Samnites Pentri, the crib of the Sannite nation. The Picvs expresses the strength of the earth, of the agricultural and settled nature and so it is “numen silvestris”, dweller of the forests, oracular god, that when he appears, he has a central role in the mutation of the “things” of nature, including the transformation of the must in wine. In fact, the bright and colorful feathers of the Picvs are carriers of fertility and beneficial rains, preannounced by the woodpecker’s cry.
